Vehicle Tax via SEPA Direct Debit
How the collection works
At first registration, you grant the Hauptzollamt a SEPA direct debit mandate. Vehicle tax is then collected automatically, usually once a year, on the due date — you don't need to request a separate invoice.
If the account balance is insufficient, return fees apply, and repeated failures can lead to the vehicle being forcibly deregistered.
This guide provides general information and does not replace individual tax advice. For your specific case, use our calculator or contact your Hauptzollamt.
Frequently asked questions
Can I pay by bank transfer instead?
Generally not — the SEPA direct debit mandate is mandatory at registration; exceptions are rare and must be arranged with the Hauptzollamt.
Exactly when is the amount debited?
The date is tied to the vehicle's first registration date and is stated on the tax assessment notice.
