Non-binding estimate under §§ 8, 9 KraftStG (German vehicle tax act). Not legal advice.

How the calculation works

Since 2021, German vehicle tax for cars first registered on or after 1 July 2009 has two components: a base amount tied to engine displacement, and a CO₂ surcharge. The displacement portion is €2.00 per started 100 cc for petrol engines and €9.50 for diesel engines.

The CO₂ component kicks in above 95 g/km and rises in bands: €2.00/g up to 115 g/km, then €2.20, €2.50, €2.90, €3.40, up to €4.00 per gram above 195 g/km. The lower your car's WLTP figure, the smaller this portion.

Fully electric vehicles are completely exempt from vehicle tax until the end of 2035 (§ 3d KraftStG) — the calculator applies this automatically.

This calculator provides a non-binding estimate based on current KraftStG rates. The legally binding tax amount is set by your local Hauptzollamt.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I find my car's CO₂ figure?

The WLTP CO₂ value is listed in field 49a of your German vehicle registration certificate (Zulassungsbescheinigung Teil I).

Does this calculator apply to older vehicles?

No. Cars first registered before 5 November 2008 fall under the old, purely displacement-based system — see our guide on older vehicles.

How is the tax collected?

Usually via annual SEPA direct debit initiated by the tax office — see our SEPA direct debit guide for details.

Is the result legally binding?

No, it's a non-binding estimate. The binding assessment is issued by your local Hauptzollamt (main customs office).
